Update From The Authors Re: The Other ‘Dude’ It has been brought to my attention that an author of another publication entitled ‘Dude, Where’s My Career?’ has been implying on her blog that we somehow “borrowed” the idea for the title. Naturally, we want to address this, deny any implication and set the record straight. You can see the screenshot below from the blog, that has been sent to us by a kind reader. Yes, that’s right, you cannot copyright the title of a book. If you could we would have done so because our book was PUBLISHED FIRST!!! Our ‘Dude’ was first published on 16 DECEMBER 2007 whilst Tanya De Grunwald’s book was published on 2 JUNE 2008 (Near enough 6 months AFTER ours!) But don’t take our word for it, as you can see by directly comparing who published first on a few of the major retailers, such as Amazon.com. As you can see from this screenshot, we published Dude Where's My Career? first in 2007: Whilst the other book followed later in 2008... If that wasn’t enough to make the point, we would like to point out that WE own the URL for www.dudewheresmycareer.com, registered back in 2007, registered when WE first had the idea. Furthermore, we have even nowin 2009 published our SECOND EDITION of the book since the first in 2007. I have never read the other book, I imagine it is very good, but I am disappointed in the comment on Tanya’s blog that could easily mislead a reader into thinking her book came first, when simply the facts speak for themselves. For the record, “Rory something” and Tanya De Grunwald are still “not friends”. Rory James (31 July 2009)
What can you do, these things happen. One coincidence, two completely different approaches. The other book has been described as “cheerful”, and from the chapter summaries it seems like a good straightforward guide to getting a nice corporate job. Of course, that’s nothing like the counterculture, caustic and viciously honest approach that distinguishes Rory and me, and indeed the whole Artists & Saboteurs project. We don’t think this is at odds with the general mood out there… au contraire, our sales and feedback fully vindicate this supposition. There’s no cheerfulness out there, just a lot of anger and dissatisfaction. Anyway, ’nuff said, let’s put this behind us. Best wishes to everyone! Luke Della Robbia (31 July 2009) |
