'Visions of Femininity: The Marriage of Painting and Printmaking'
This exhibition, organised and promoted by Artists & Saboteurs, looks at six original works by painter Isabel Florence and the unique prints of printmaker Susan Yeates.
The six paintings form a series of female portraits, depicting or alluding to images of femininity in their literary or mythological context. Using the paintings as a starting point, Susan has produced prints through a process that ends up with individual works that are more than simply derivative, but new works in themselves, imbued with creativity and qualities from the printmaking process.
This fascinating visual exploration highlights how printmaking can take an original painting and, beyond mere replication of the image, evolve it creatively into a ‘new’ work, echoing the original, but providing it with new freedoms via the medium of printmaking.
In this way, the traditional tensions that exist between the printmaker and the painter, questions of authorship and originality, are simultaneously explored and overcome through this exciting and visually impressive exhibition.
